What if I could give you a pill that would fix everything in your body? Would you take it?
If I could show you the fountain of youth, would you go to it?
We all know that no such pill or fountain exist, but did you know there is something that you can do
every day that will make you feel better, stronger, more full of energy. This “fountain” has been
shown to improve diabetes, depression, insomnia, heart disease, and arthritis. It can also reduce
the risk for cancer and benefit hundreds of other diseases.
What is This Cure-All?
This cure-all is called exercise.
All right, I hear you moaning. Exercise… how can exercise be the fountain of youth? Do I really
have to exercise? Are you sure there isn't just a pill I can take?
Exercise can be fun and, once you start, you will find that you cannot do without it.
How Does Exercise Benefit You?
It’s simple, really. Your body was designed to move and be active. Imagine purchasing a brand
new race car, this car is ready to run in any race. It is perfect. A group of mechanics spent years
testing the right design, perfecting the right balance between engine and car design. This car is
beautiful, perfectly painted, and ready to go. Now imagine that you purchase this beautiful car,
drive it home, stick it in a garage, place it in front of a television, put a remote control on the front
seat, close the garage door and just leave it there.
What a waste!
Your body is perfect in every way, and, unlike the car, it will actually fall apart if you park it in the
garage and don’t use it. You need to take your body out of the garage and get on the racetrack.
It does not’t have to be the Indy 500, but you do have to move your buns around in order to
support your health.
We are meant to use our bodies much more than we do. Our ancestors were much stronger than
the average human is today. They may have lived shorter lives due to accidents and infections,
but they were much healthier than we are.
More Muscle Mass equals Healthier Life
In the book Biomarker, by Evans and Rosenberg, they state that lean body mass (lean body mass
is a measurement of how much muscle we have) is the best determinant as to whether someone is
going to live a long time or how healthy they are. Think about that! The more muscle you have,
the longer you live: no matter what disease you may have. The more muscles you have, the
healthier you will be and the longer you will live.
Increasing muscle mass not only makes you feel great, but muscle is very active tissue. The more
muscle mass you have, the more calories you will burn. What is great about is that this burning
goes on 24 hours a day. That is, you burn more calories, even when you are sitting still, doing
nothing. Who said you cannot get something for nothing? Increasing muscle mass helps you feel
better, helps you keep your weight down and may help you live a longer, healthier life.
Adding in a weight-lifting program is one of the essentials of good health. Getting together with a
personal trainer is one of the great ways to get started in a program. A personal trainer can help
you to set goals and stick with them. It is best to start out slow and then build as you go along. Two
or three weight-lifting sessions a week are ideal. Some people will do a little every day; each day
focuses on a different body part.
What ever works for you; choose it and do it. The payoff for adding a weight lifting to your program
is enormous. You will feel wonderful.
Cardiovascular Exercise
Some sort of cardiovascular exercise should be a part of your workout scheme. This means that
you have to get out there and get your heart pumping and your lungs working. The best exercise
to choose is one that you had fun as when you were a kid.
I am a runner. When I was in third and fourth grade, a friend of mine and I used to run home from
school every day. There have been periods in my life when I haven’t run, but it has been with me
most of my life. If you think back at some form of exercise as fun, then go start that again today.
Many people love to ride their bikes, or swim, or skate. Choose what you enjoy and start it today.
Simply walking can have great benefits. There are whole magazines devoted just to walking. You
can even buy special walking shoes. The best time to walk is after dinner. Remember that your
body stores fat from sugars that you eat. If you increase the amount of exercise that you do
following a dinner meal, less of the sugars will turn into fat. Most people eat dinner too late and
then go to sleep, or they will eat and then sit down to watch TV that means more sugars are
turned into fat.
Listen to Your Body
As always, listen to your body. If you are in too much pain the following day, you probably overdid
it. Don’t expect to have no pain though. It is often a little painful waking your body up from the
sedentary life it is used to. Know that it won’t last long and eventually your body will hurt more if
you don’t exercise.
Take the first steps and get out the door and start moving your body around. You will be surprised
at how great you feel!
